Nova Southeastern University Doctoral Candidate

My Doctoral Journey

Greetings from Sunny Southwest Florida!

Greetings from sunny Southwest Florida! My name is Teresa Calhoun, and I have been honored to serve as an educator at Zion Lutheran School for over 30 years. Throughout my career, I have been committed to fostering meaningful learning experiences, supporting curriculum alignment, advancing instructional technology, and nurturing a positive, faith-centered school community. Teaching has long been my calling, and I continue to find deep fulfillment in guiding students toward moments of clarity, confidence, and discovery.

Professional Background

My diverse academic and professional preparation equips me to serve learners of all ages. I hold:

  • Ed.D. Candidate, Education – Curriculum & Teaching

  • M.A., Adult Education & Online Learning

  • B.A., Business Administration (Management Concentration)

  • Technical Certificate, Paralegal Studies

These fields together strengthen my instructional design, leadership skills, curriculum expertise, and understanding of legal and ethical systems—all of which inform my approach to teaching and educational reform.

Across my decades at Zion Lutheran School, I have contributed as a teacher, mentor, curriculum planner, and instructional leader, striving to create learning environments where every student feels valued and capable.

Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy is rooted in the belief that education transforms lives. Students thrive when instruction is engaging, data-informed, and grounded in empathy. Nothing compares to witnessing a student experience the powerful “A-ha!” moment—the instant when understanding takes root and confidence grows. These moments motivate me to design learning experiences that are meaningful, joyful, and accessible to all.

Future Aspirations

As I pursue my Ed.D., I am preparing for the next chapter of my career: returning to higher education to teach and mentor the next generation of educators. Previously, I spent nearly a decade teaching business courses at a community college, an experience that affirmed my passion for shaping adult learners. I now look forward to applying my classroom expertise to support and inspire future teachers as they enter the profession.

Personal Life & Interests

Outside of teaching and academic work, my life is rich with family, creativity, and adventure. I am the proud mother of three children—ages 28, 22, and 15—and our home is joyfully shared with a lively group of pets:

  • Two huskies: Winter & Alice

  • A Shih Tzu: Ozzy

  • Four cats: Mr. Blue, Annie, Zoey & Harvey

My hobbies bring balance and joy to my life. I love crafting, quilting, and sewing, which allow me to express my creativity and unwind. I enjoy traveling, especially trips that include winery visits, new scenery, and cultural exploration. Living near the coast gives me the gift of beach life, where the sun, sand, and ocean serve as a peaceful retreat.
